Has the old carpet in your house seen better days? We get it. Nothing in your home gets quite as much wear as the carpeting. Family members and pets walk on it all day, so dirt, grass, and lots of other stuff get tracked in from outside, and food and drinks are dropped by accident. Your poor carpet works hard! BISSELL Rental can help you revive your carpeting, make it look clean, and maybe show it a little love.

Step 1: Vacuum Up Dust & Dirt

To begin restoring carpet, we recommend starting with a clean foundation. Remove furniture from the room or move it out of the way as much as you can, to vacuum the carpet. Vacuum slowly and in opposite directions to try to get the carpet fibers to stand up. Also, pay special attention as you vacuum along the edges of the room to capture all loose dust, dirt, hair and debris.

Step 2: Remove Set-In Stains from Carpet

One of the things we are asked a lot is about how to get old stains out of carpet. There are several methods, but our best advice is to always pre-treat carpeting before cleaning. Giving your carpet a little help before deep cleaning will go a long way towards removing stains. If you aren’t sure what kind of carpet stain you have, try an oxygen stain remover, like our Oxy Deep® Pro pre-treat spray. Spray the stain and surrounding area about five minutes before you start carpet cleaning.

Step 3: Remove Furniture Dents in Carpet

Not sure how to get dents out of carpet? According to carpet manufacturers, there are some handy tips you can do to remove dents from carpet:
  • Use a fork or the edge of a coin to gently stroke dented area and bring the tufts of carpet more straight
  • Hold a steam iron several inches above the carpet surface and steam the indented area lightly, then brush the area with your fingertips. Do NOT let the iron touch the carpet.
You can also try using BISSELL® Big Green® Carpet Cleaner rental to clean the dented area then, when the carpet is wet, use your fingertips to gently brush the dent out of the carpet.

Carpet Care Tips: Remove Odors from Carpet

If you sit down on the carpet, do you ever catch a whiff of something? Over time, carpets absorb smells in the home because they are soft surfaces. It happens. Try using our Deep Clean and Refresh with Febreze® formula to revive carpet. It has a fresh, breeze-dried laundry scent that will leave your carpet smelling fresh.

If you have pets in your home, there may be lingering odors from pet dander in the carpet or previous accidents. If you know there is a spot where your pets have marked, pre-treat it before deep cleaning with an enzyme cleaner like our Pet Urine Stain and Odor spray. Cover the stain and the surrounding area and then cover it with a damp, white or color-safe cloth for 24 hours. This gives the enzymes time to work on removing the microscopic particles that make up the carpet stain and odor.

Carpet Care Tips: Keeping Carpet Clean, Longer!

Now that your carpet is much cleaner, let’s keep it that way! Carpeting is expensive and not easy to replace. It can and should last for a long time, but maintenance is key. Here are some carpet cleaning tips:
  1. Vacuum carpet once a week or more if you have pets to prevent excess hair from collecting on your carpets.
  2. Spot clean spills right away. Keep some Oxy Deep Pro on hand to help! When you clean stains, clean from the outside of the stain in to minimize spreading. Also, blot the stain, don’t scrub! This will help keep your carpet from getting fuzzy.
  3. Add welcome mats by your doors to trap dirt before it gets on carpets in the main parts of your home.
  4. Remove your shoes before walking inside your home.
  5. Consider adding area rugs in high traffic areas throughout your home that have carpeting to avoid matting and carpet damage.
  6. Rearrange furniture every now and then to change the flow of walk patterns through your home and reduce carpet wear.
  7. Deep clean carpets every three to six months with BISSELL® Big Green® Carpet Cleaner to keep carpets dirt-free and refreshed.
